Your glasses set the screen height, not the rule book

This site’s usual position is that the furniture is the adjustable part and the body is not. There is one situation where that reverses, and it’s common enough to be worth its own post: if you wear glasses, the lens is less adjustable than the monitor is, so the lens wins.

A spectacle lens is ground to bring a particular distance into focus, and in a varifocal or bifocal it does that in a particular part of the glass. Your eyes go to where the text is sharp. Your head follows your eyes. That chain runs whether or not the screen is where a diagram says it should be, which is why a monitor set correctly by every general rule can still have you sitting with your chin in the air all afternoon.

The check

The ordinary monitor-height check — eyes closed, head settles, open, notice where you’re looking — still works. But wearing glasses you need a second question after it, because the head can be neutral and the eyes still wrong.

The forehead one is worth dwelling on. Short-sighted people frequently see screen-distance text more comfortably with the glasses off than on, because their unaided focus happens to fall near screen distance. If you’ve been doing that without thinking about it, that’s your eyes telling you the prescription in front of them is for a distance you aren’t using.

What each kind of lens does to your setup

Varifocals and bifocals. The reading part of the lens is at the bottom, so to read through it you raise your chin. Put a screen at conventional height and a varifocal wearer will tip their head back to find the zone and hold it there — which is the same neck load as looking down at a laptop, applied in the opposite direction and usually described as “the monitor’s fine, it’s just my neck”.

The furniture answer is to drop the screen a long way, until your head is level and the text is sharp through the part of the lens your eyes naturally use. It will end up lower than anything you have read about, low enough that a colleague will comment. That’s correct for you and the comment is not information.

Varifocals also have a narrow sharp corridor, so a wide screen can force you to turn your head along a line of text rather than move your eyes. If that’s happening, the screen is too close as well as too high — moving it back puts more of its width inside the corridor.

Single-vision reading glasses. Ground for reading distance, which is nearer than screen distance for most people. Wearing them at a monitor makes the screen slightly soft, so you move the only movable thing — your head — toward the screen. Head forward of the shoulders is the most expensive posture in the whole setup, and here it isn’t caused by the desk at all.

Single-vision distance glasses or contacts. Usually the easiest case: focus is set beyond the screen, so the screen is a compromise but a mild one. Larger text plus slightly more distance often settles it.

Contacts set for different distances in each eye. Some people wear one lens for distance and one for near. This works well for a lot of tasks and can be awkward at a screen, and it’s an optical question rather than a desk one. Nothing you do to the monitor fixes it.

What to change, in what order

One: text size. Free, instant, and it removes the reason to lean in. This applies to everyone and doubly to anyone wearing a correction that isn’t set for screen distance. If you have been resisting larger text out of vanity, this is the post that gives you permission.

Two: distance. Move the screen back until the whole thing is inside the sharp part of the lens, and compensate with the text size rather than by coming closer. Varifocal wearers in particular tend to have the screen too close, because closer feels like it should help and it narrows the usable zone.

Three: height. Down, usually, and further down than feels right if you’re in varifocals. Lowering a monitor is the harder direction mechanically, since most stands have a minimum — so this is one of the few genuine cases for a monitor arm, and the free version is to raise the chair and rebuild the footrest so your eyes end up above the screen instead. Which is why the chair comes first in the chain and why doing this out of order means doing it twice.

Four: tilt. Angle the screen face so it’s roughly square to the line your eyes actually take. With a low screen, that means tilting the top back. Watch for the reflection this introduces — a screen angled upward catches the ceiling light, and glare moves your head just as effectively as a badly placed screen does.

Then, and only then, consider the lens. It’s worth knowing that lenses ground for screen distance exist as a category — an optician will call them occupational or computer lenses — and that they are a thing to ask about rather than something this site can recommend. Mention the distance your screen sits at when you go, because nobody can prescribe for a working distance they haven’t been told about.

When it isn’t the desk’s problem

Some symptoms are not furniture. Headaches after screen work, eyes that ache or water, text that doubles or blurs intermittently, or a change in how well you can see — those go to an optician or a doctor, not into another round of monitor adjustment. The same is true of a prescription more than a couple of years old: the cheapest possible fix for a screen you keep leaning toward is an eye test.

And the ordinary limit: getting the lens and the screen to agree removes a reason to hold your head somewhere it doesn’t want to be. It doesn’t treat anything. If you’re reading your own setup from how you feel at the end of the day, uncorrected or badly matched vision is one of the two or three most common causes of a symptom that looks entirely like a furniture problem — and persistent pain, numbness, tingling or weakness is a reason to see a clinician either way.
